First MOT at 4yrs?

MOTS TO START AFTER FOUR YEARS – GOV’T PROPOSAL

New cars will need to have their first MOT test after four years instead of three from 2018 if a new government proposal is adopted. The proposals are currently undergoing public consultation.

Safer technology and improved manufacturing mean, according to the government, that new cars stay roadworthy for longer. Around 2.2 million cars have their first MOT test every year, with faulty lights responsible for the majority of fails, according to the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency).

The three-year deadline before a car's first MOT was introduced in 1967, and government figures show that, since 2006, there was a drop of almost two thirds (from 155 to just 57) in the number of accidents involving a 3- or 4-year-old vehicle where a vehicle defect was a contributing factor.

Switching to a four-year period before a first MOT will bring England, Wales and Scotland in line with Northern Ireland, and other European countries including France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Denmark and Norway.

At Dickens Vauxhall Wrexham, we're not entirely convinced it's a good idea, but it will put increased emphasis on drivers' taking better care of their cars, with regular maintenance becoming even more inmportant.

Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows Dickens of Wrexham Limited to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders. We are a credit broker and not a lender. We can introduce you to a limited number of lenders and their finance products. We are not an independent financial advisor and we act as their agent for this introduction. We may advise you on the products, subject to your personal circumstances, though you are not obliged to take our advice or recommendation. We do not charge you a fee for our services. Whichever lender we introduce you to, we will typically receive commission from them (either a fixed fee or a fixed percentage of the amount you borrow).
